My students at Lodi's Beads in Bosque Farms New Mexico "wrote the book" on creativity and initiative; it will take me several blogs to describe all of their work that was built upon the classes that I previously taught at Lod's shop.

Last year I had the opportunity to teach a design of mine called "Tucson Bangle II," at Lodi's Beads. It incorporated Delica beads and SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS. Ten students took the six hour class and completed one or two units of the bangle. Instructors always leave classes like this with some trepidation knowing that some students will not go home and continue working on the project, and then at a later date they may have forgotten the technique resigning the materials to the "unfinished" bin. Not so with Lodi's students; they not only completed the project (some in record time), but several students expanded the design with creative twists.

Several of the students commented that they do not like bangles, but prefer bracelets with toggles instead. Christina Tolendino very neatly turned my A Night To Remember bangle into a bracelet by adding a slide toggle. One student, Pat Mc Niel, cleverly inserted a toggle between the units of another of my designs. Further, she opened the bangle at two other locations to use her new design as a watch band. (See photos below) Initially Pat was uncertain about modifying my design and thought that it may violate the ethics of beading. I pointed out that techniques are not copyrighted and she simply expanded upon her learning from me, and did not in any way "steal" my creation.

Another positive aspect of having students "run" with my designs, is that I now can take my students creativity into consideration and incorporate toggles or clasps into my future bangles as an option.

The Arctic Vortex caught up with us in Louisiana and iced us in for three days. When we finally broke free from winter's grasp we arrived in Arizona to one of the warmest winters on record. While the locals were complaining about the heat, I pointed out that you don't have to shovel it. One minor glitch was realizing that all of our clothes had been packed in 6 degree weather and were not going to be comfortable in the mid 80's.

This year I shared a room in The Windmill Inn with Beth Kraft of Nordic Gypsy fame. We both offered classes as well as project kits for sale. My classes involved projects utilizing Delica beads and SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS.

This show is always a wonderful opportunity to check out the newest materials and techniques in beading, and to network with other beading colleagues from around the country.

This show typically runs from a couple of days before Punxsutawney Phil (a rodent with the gift of prophesy) predicts six more weeks of reasons to be in Tucson, until late February. Check out this year's websites while they are still up to see the wealth of activities and events that happen here.

Hope to see you in Tucson next year!
This was meant as a derogatory statement at the time, however since then several positive interpretations have emerged. For example, some of our best athletes have no ability to teach what they do, yet some of our finest coaches were never our best athletes.

Recently, I taught Tucson Bangle II, which incorporates Delica beads and SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS and uses a new technique that I developed called Cross-Over Peyote stitch. It is always exciting for me to watch my students "get it" and enjoy the process.

Several month after the class, I was back at the same bead shop (Bead Soup, Savage Mills, MD) and one off my former students, Jo Ray came to me with several bracelets she had designed using my technique. This, for me, is the greatest joy in teaching when I watch my own students become designer and teacher. So, a better interpretation of the old saying could be, "Those who can, do: Those who can appreciate, teach."
Does your dining room table look like a display counter at a bead store? Does your vacuum cleaner sound like there is a hailstorm when you clean around your work area? When you come home from bead shopping, do you find that you already have the same color seed beads or SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS in your stash?
If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, you may need a more efficient organization system for your materials. Here is one suggestion:

The bottles in the photograph are media bottles (square), or chemical storage bottles (round), and both can be purchased from a number of scientific supply houses online. The bottles come in 30ml, 60ml, and 90ml (and larger); the 90ml will hold 150gms of cylinder beads; the 60ml will hold 80gms of cylinder beads; and the 30ml will hold 37gms of cylinder beads or two 10-gross packs of 3mm SWAROVSKI bicones. The bottles are see-through with easy screw on and off caps. When you take inventory, a quick inspection of each bottle will tell you roughly how many grams of beads you have remaining.
Further, these bottles store easily in "Really Useful Boxes,"™ available at Staples. The 8.1L box will hold forty-two 60ml bottles or thirty 90ml bottles; the 4L box will hold seventy round 30ml bottles. These clear boxes make inventory and organization by color or size easy, and the boxes stack conveniently for transport.
These holes were a necessary part of my designs to embellish the larger vintage crystals with Delica beads and SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS. This presented a brand new challenge as I have no 45 degree needles. Using a flexible dental floss needle did the trick to make the turn in the crystal. Attached beads on either end of the hole were incorporated into my designs. Sometimes the holes in the crystals were larger than a size 11º, or even size 10º Delicas. Instead of using thread, I coaxed a piece of 24 gauge craft wire through the hole and then finished either end with three small turns using fine round nosed pliers. These tiny wire loops became anchor "beads" for the rest of my design. In crystals with sharp edges through the holes that would cut thread, I found that the wire technique worked well.
A recent find in Naples Maine was boxes full of old crystals from chandlers. My mind immediately began racing and before I knew it, I had purchased literally a bucket full of potential projects. After carefully removing the old wires, I soaked the crystals in ammonia and water. As I laid them out on my dining room table to dry, I sorted them by shapes and sizes, and ideas began to form. I could envision beaded bands around the various shapes using netting, peyote and Ndebele stitches. Several of the crystals had small chips, so I knew I would have to conspicuously place bead work to cover those spots. Still other crystals had unique shapes that would lend themselves to beaded bands, bales, etc. My husband pointed out that this was an excellent opportunity to also re-purpose some of my bountiful supply of surplus beads. At this point I see no limit to the variety of combinations that can be created. Below are a couple examples of ornaments using several different sizes of crystals, embellished with Delica beads and SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS.
This scenario can be a source of frustration, or motivation to get creative in a new or varied, "colorways." This has happened to all of us who design and over the past year it has happened to me twice on the same project. My first design of this bracelet included a favorite color combination of SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS and Delica Beads. As I often do, I purchase materials that catch my eye and then sit on them until my mind can put them together in a design. By the time this design was in teachable form, one of the element colors was no longer available. My first revision maintained as much of the original color combination as possible, but again, by the time I had a wearable bangle, another item was discontinued. This time I was forced to create outside my colorways comfort zone and the result turned out to be my favorite combination of the three. The moral of the story is, let inconvenience be another motivation for creativity.
I belong to a social group of artists who get together occasionally for good food, good conversation, and some free time to work on projects. We all have our roots in spool knitting and pot holder weaving. We originally got together as a group of beginning beaders, however most of the group members have gravitated to different handwork. One is a quilter, two are knitters, one is a wire worker, and while I like everything, I spend most of my time beading. Each member of the group attends workshops in their various areas and each arrives back with our group eager to share new techniques, new designs and new creations. One of the regular activities of our group, when we meet, is "show and tell." From this group I have learned a wealth of interesting artsy techniques, for example, did you know you can dye yarn with Kool-Aid? I should have realized this as my son was growing up! I have also learned how to knit socks, and I have become fascinated with quilting. As a result, I took a workshop at the Sisters Quilt Festival in Oregon this summer. What a fascinating and wonderful experience; I would highly recommend this festival to anyone who likes sewing crafts.

One of my recent creative project ideas coming from our group was a desire to make a bangle with a quilt-like design. I used the traditional Flying Geese pattern, and a technique I developed called Quilted Peyote stitch, to come up with the bracelet pictured below made with Delica beads and SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS.
Every now and then I am
asked, “how did you get started in beading?” It turns out to be a long story
involving love of crafts (especially needle and thread work), a motivational
home economics class in school (the stichin’ part, not the stirrin’), and time
to focus on creative projects.

One such time, in the early
80’s, found my husband, son, and me at Alden Farm Camps, a turn-of-the-last-century
fishing camp in the Belgrade Lakes region of Maine; we were vacationing with my
husband’s parents and sister. We stayed in amenities and facilities-challenged
cabins (known as camps in Maine) at the water’s edge; indoor plumbing was the
most cutting edge technology on the premises, and the septic system would have
been considered emergent technology. The cabins did include the wilderness
beauty of a northwoods view across the lake, the plaintiff calls of loons, and
frequent evening aurora light shows. The rustic dining hall was the communal
gathering place for meals, cribbage and bridge games, and conversations amid the
mounted fish, and trappings of a bygone era. The food rivaled any five star
restaurant anywhere. Aldens was the most nostalgic location on the planet for
my husband’s family, and our son represented the fourth generation of the
family to gather here. Camp activities included fishing, eating, reading,
sleeping and more fishing, which brings be back to my original focus – “how did
I get started in beading?”

As I don’t fish (I do eat,
sleep, and read some), I had some time to spend while the rest of the camp was
occupied. After finding a supply of beads in town, my sister-in-law and I
prevailed upon one of the cabin boys to build us small looms. For a week, we
sat on the cabin porch and made woven beaded bracelets. From this vantage
point, we could watch our son and his friends playing along the lake and at the
beach, and we could see the comings and goings of the boats and fishermen.
Although the equipment was crude, and the materials were not uniform, our
bracelets turned out very well and they were admired by the whole camp. When I
got home to PA, I gave the bracelet that I made to my mother who was thrilled
with it. She wore it to her next hair appointment and explained to her
hairdresser that her daughter had just come back from camp where she had made the
bracelet, where upon her hairdresser asked, “how old is your daughter?”

Since those days, I have
come to love beadwork and Maine, and I look for every opportunity to bead in
Maine at our own camp (with amenities and facilities) while my husband goes fishing.
The equipment is very different now, the techniques are more sophisticated, and
the supplies are the far more elegant and uniform, SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS and
Delicas, but the love of the craft, and the excitement of creativity is the
same.

What a wonderful experience beginning with a welcome DIANE HERTZLER sign in front of the store. Lodi's Beads provides an extensive supply of all beading necessities, including SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS. Lodi's classroom is large, bright, cheerful, and always a hum of industry. The warm, comfortable, atmosphere attracts a sizable enrollment of regular, serious beaders who are as friendly as the surroundings. Saturday's class (Tucson Bangle II) utilized cylinder beads and SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS. Students completed a representative segment of the bangle and left with the skills needed to finish the project at home. Sunday's class (Four Strong Winds Bracelet) also employed cylinder beads and SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS. The class included repeat beaders from Saturday, and I have already begun receiving photos of completed projects. The overall experience was accented by the relaxed, congenial, atmosphere, the tasty, catered treats (by Lodi's husband), and the comedic talents of several of the beaders, e.g. "Diane, will you tell me if I'm where I think I am?" Before class concluded, we had already begun planning for next year. Below is a group photo of Saturday's class. www.lodisbeads.com
The exciting holidays are behind us; the Super Bowl is history; the novelty of the new snow blower has worn off; and worst of all, the Ground Hog has seen his shadow. How do you face this long stretch of indoor winter living? The first thing you do is get out your favorite summer clothes and lay them out on the bed, then get out your bead stash and start matching colors. Ask yourself, when I am wearing this outfit in my new tan, ten pounds lighter after February and March at the gym, what bead accessory do I want to be wearing to make this outfit pop? Perhaps you already have a favorite pattern, or you may decide to let the creative juices flow. Either way, as you sit by the sunny window working on the "summery" project, you"ll find your winter mood softening, and your thoughts migrating to a beach somewhere. The bracelet in the photo, entitled Brazilian Bangle, was inspired by a Carmen Miranda hat. What could make you feel like a warm June day more than working with these colors? The bangle band is done with cylinder and seed beads in a Crossover Ndebele pattern and it is embellished with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05789188025716966872noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2389598103639096032.post-65665463636574436322013-01-16T12:04:00.002-08:002013-01-16T12:04:22.155-08:00Crystal Jewelry Inspiration

This blog will introduce
my contribution to Crystal Jewelry
Inspiration from the CREATE YOUR STYLE Ambassadors, 2013, Karin Van
Voorhees, Editor, Kalbach Book, Waukesha, WI. This is a beautiful compilation of inspirational crystal
projects submitted by thirty of the CREATE YOUR STYLE with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS
Ambassadors. The book also includes an international gallery of
photographs. My particular
project, “Simply Toggles,” is the final project in the Ambassador section of
the book; as the most recent addition to the Ambassador Team, I am thrilled to
have been a part of this publication.
The diversity and scope of the projects are quite impressive.

It's a beautiful day and you want to bead outside, and the lake looks sooooo inviting, and your husband wants you to keep him company while he goes fishing, so what do you do? You pack up your supplies and bead in the boat. Please note, this blog is specific to a "boat," and not the more generic "watercraft" which would include kayaks and jet skis. All watercraft are not suitable for beading. It is helpful to have a wide and deep hull to position yourself away from wave action, spray and flying lures. (please see photo) Having a pet in the boat adds yet another dimension to the experience. A portable, closable bead tray that holds a beading surface and all of your materials is indispensable, and these can be found in Staples or Office Max, albiet they are not sold as "portable beading trays."
Beading in a boat gets interesting when other boats come by to see what you are doing. One noteworthy experience occurred on Segabo Lake a year or two ago when we were drifting with the wind; my husband was fishing and the dog was watching every cast. I was sitting on a lawn chair beading when a Fish Commission boat came along side and the conversation went something like this:
“Please confine your dog, we want to inspect your boat; I am Officer Heft, and this is Officer Miller, and…what are you doing?”
“I’m beading.”
“Beating what?”
“No, beading.”
“What’s that?”
“Well, I’m sewing beads together to make a piece of jewelry.”
Looking confused, “uh huh…, what’s the shiny stuff in the little vials?”
“That’s my stash of beads and SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS."
Looking really interested now, “is that some kinda euphemism?”
“No, here take a look,” handing over a bottle of crystals.
“Would ya look at that? And you can actually see these?”
“I’m fortunate to have good close vision”
"What do you make with these things?"
Showing a current project, "bracelets, ornaments, all kinds of sparkly things. I also teach lessons; maybe your wife would like to learn how to bead?'
"Does she have to do it in the boat?"
"Oh no; usually I'm in the house, or on the deck when I'm beading."
"How much does all that stuff cost?"
Husband - "you don't want to know, but not much more than my fishing gear. And she can sell her products."
Diane - "Here is my card, have her give me a call and we can get together to discuss beading."
"Thanks and you folks have a safe day on the water."

Here I demonstrated my Chevron Chain Tennis Bracelet using SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS. This was a wonderful experience as I made new friends and contacts from Dreamtime Creations and I met a host of beaders who stopped to learn the Chevron Chain technique.

I also had the opportunity to demonstrate for CREATE YOUR STYLE with SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS at their booth on the floor. As a new CREATE YOUR STYLE Ambassador, this was a very exciting chance to not only show netting technique in another one of my designs, but to represent CREATE YOUR STYLE and the use of products from the SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS assortment. One of the most rewarding aspects of designing or teaching is watching the excitement in the eyes of students, or in this case, the visitors to the booths.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05789188025716966872noreply@blogger.com0
